Ballet | Modern Dance | Contemporary | Hip Hop | Exercise & Fitness Routines = Physie!
What is Physie?
Physical Culture, or Physie (pronounced 'fizzy'), is a sport for girls and women from 3 years up which aims to build confidence, good posture, strength, fitness and flexibility through exercise. Uniquely Australian, the Bjelke-Petersen School of Physical Culture has been involved in the fitness of Australians for 120 proud years across the country. The syllabus, updated annually, is performed to modern music and comprises standing and floor exercises, aerobic warm-ups, basic ballet, and modern dance.
The choreography is age-appropriately designed to teach the relationship of music to movement, rhythm, co-ordination, balance, and musical interpretation. The Physical Culture year culminates in a series of friendly competitions for both teams and individuals. These are not compulsory, but they do help to foster a club spirit, a sense of belonging, and club loyalty. Physical Culture is a wonderful way to develop healthy minds and bodies whilst forming friendships that last a lifetime. Most of all, Physical Culture is about fun, fitness and friendship!

Learning PHYSIE improves confidence, develops a sense of achievement and helps to build self-esteem in the best way possible – by encouraging girls to perform in front of an audience.
All choreography is designed to develop strength, good posture, fitness, flexibility, balance, co-ordination and discipline.
Other benefits include the development of the following skills, which can assist with academic achievement, body geography, spatial awareness, concentration, sequencing, fine and gross motor skills, left/right discrimination, listening skills, rhythm, memory and teamwork.
And best of all… it’s fun!

Our Club
Surfers Paradise Physical Culture Club was established in 1982. Over the past 30 years we have achieved amazing results at all levels of competition with many State and National Team and Individual Titles, but these achievements pale in comparison to the amazing friendships that all our members and their families share. Our club has more than 100 members ranging from 3 years through to 63 years. We pride ourselves on being the friendly club, and love that so many of our members have been associated with our club for 20 years or more.

Our current teachers, Rochelle Smith, Shannon Hines and Jaime Colson have been involved in Physical Culture for over 25 years. Each has achieved outstanding results personally at State and National levels. Shannon and Jaime teach our preschooler and junior classes, where their bubbly personalities and attention to detail have seen them achieve outstanding results. Rochelle's commitment, dedication and professionalism have seen her senior and ladies sections of the club also achieve incredible results. Contact our teachers now!
