About the Surfers Paradise Physical Culture Club

Surfers Paradise Physical Culture Club was established in 1982. Over the past 27 years we have achieved amazing results at all levels of competition with many State & National Team and Individual Titles, but these achievements pale in comparison to the amazing friendships that all our members and their families share.

Our Club!

At Surfers Paradise Physical Culture Club there is a very strong emphasis on all members having fun.  Whether it be during classes or the many social activities we engage in throughout the year including our annual car rally, trivia night, Race Day, BBQ fun days and many more.

Surfers Paradise has established a wonderful reputation within the Physie community and is a highly successful club thanks to our past and present teachers and their fabulous achievements.

Our current teachers, Rochelle Smith and Shannon Hines have been members at Surfers Paradise Physical Culture Club for over 20 years. Each has achieved amazing results personally at State and National levels.  Shannon teaches our kindy and junior classes, where her bubbly personality tend to bring out the best in her students. Rochelle’s attention to detail has seen her senior and ladies sections of the club achieve incredible results.

We would like to welcome Jaime Colson to the teaching ranks this year. She has achieved fabulous results at both the State and National level and with over 25 years experience she is a welcome addition to the teaching staff. Jaime now joins with Shannon in teaching the Junior classes.

What is Physie?

Physical Culture (or Physie as we call it) is a dance sport for girls and women, which aims to build confidence, good posture, strength, grace and flexibility through exercise.

Our syllabus contains a combination of standing and floor exercises, aerobic warm-ups, ballet, exercise routines and modern dance. Routines teach the relationship of movement to music, rhythm, co-ordination, balance and musical interpretation.

Physie has been involved in keeping Australian girls and women fit and healthy for well over a century, and there are over 130 clubs established across the country.  Many large events including the 2000 Sydney Olympics use physie girls for their performances.

Competitions are available to all age groups but are by no means compulsory.   There is the opportunity for each club member to compete as an individual and/or in team events.

Physie is a great way to get fit and healthy, meet new friends and have FUN!
